The IP (Infraestruturas de Portugal) is an associate beneficiary of LIFE LINES project. In the frame of this project the company recently installed fauna passages in 5 hydraulic passages named “Works of art”, which are located in the main roads of the intervention area of LIFE LINES project (IP2, EN4 and EN114). This intervention covers the sections with higher rates of mortality and has the objective of increase the connectivity between the fragmented habitats and promote the conservation of biodiversity.
The water lines and their riparian galleries are favorable habitats for most animals, being preferential travel corridors of movement to these animals, in special to carnivores like otters, mongooses, stone martens and badgers. These Hydraulics passages constitute a safe way for animals to cross the road, with their large dimensions and dry crossing points because the presence of water constitutes a limitation on their use by the majority of the animals.
These hydraulic passages will be monitored with automatic cameras with the propose of verifying the effectiveness of the passages by the animals.
This action is one of the several tasks whose execution is the responsibility of IP.
