On 17 February 2016 the biologist Pedro Costa, from the University of Évora (EU), has shifted to a 3-day stay in the Parque Biológico de Gaia (PBG) facilities. This visit aimed to test an innovative GSM collar system that allows the continuous tracking of GPS data. Thus, it is intended to test some prototypes on animals in captivity before the beginning of the study of identification of travel routes / movements of common genet (Genetta genetta) in the surroundings of two national roads near Évora (N4 and N114). This test involved the collaboration of the veterinarians Vanessa Soeiro and Sara Loio, and the zootechnist Hugo Oliveira.
The program of following the common genet results of a collaboration between the University of Évora, coordinator of the project and the MOVETECH Telemetry which is developing solutions to remote monitoring of animals. The MOVETECH it´s a Consortium of several national entities: ICETA/CIBIO, Faculdade de Ciências de Lisboa/CE3C and from United Kingdom: University of East Anglia and British Trust for Ornithology, developing innovative technologies that combine remote collect of intensive GPS data are then transmitted by mobile networks. This project has strong support of the biologist Carlos Carrapato.
