We are working in improving an intelligent system for monitoring amphibian road-kills. The Universities of Minho and Porto developed inside the FCT project Roadkills a trailer for scanning roads with a very high spatial precision (2 mm), which together with computer vision algorithms, is able to identify automatically roadkilled amphibians. This mapping mobile system is an ideal solution to monitor passively roads. The trailer is composed by a linear camera (used frequently in industrial quality control) and linear illumination system, attached to a computer and GPS device. Our intention is to adapt this technology for the detection of birds and reduce the size of the trailer.
